SM Lanang Premier finally opened its doors in Davao City!

SM Lanang Premier finally opened its doors. September 28 marked the official public opening of SM's 46th mall and biggest SM mall in Mindanao. This is SM's second mall in the province, after SM City Davao.

"We warmly welcome our valued customers to our second mall in the province of Davao, SM Lanang Premier. This is SM Prime's biggest and first premier mall development project in Mindanao that is designed to cater to the growing demands of the Davao market and its vibrant tourism industry," SM Prime president Mr. Hans T. Sy said during the inauguration on September 27.

The new mall, which is located at the northern part of the city, bears a total land area of 100,000 square meters. It has a gross floor area of 144,002 square meters and a gross leasable area of estimatedly 88,499 square meters.

The mall envisiones to become a premier lifestyle destination in Davao, and shows unique features in the exterior and interior architecture. The building sought to be of green architecture and environment friendly features which is in line with SM’s sustainability efforts. According to reports, the mall building itself takes only 40 percent of the total property with paver blocks used in the open parking area to minimize surface run-off water. It will also have the city’s first rain catchment system minimizing storm water peak flow, surface run-off and siltation. The mall is also designed with skylights and will use LED to ensure efficient energy consumption. Park finders will also be installed at the Basement Parking to minimize carbon output from vehicles. Recycled water will be used for the building's cooling tower and for comfort room flushing.

SM Lanang Premier is already 88% occupied by various tenants, such as SM Department Store, SM Supermarket, SM Centerstage, SM Food Court, Forever 21, Centerstage, Ace Hardware, Cha Time, Mesa and Vikings, IMAX Theater (see list).

SM Lanang Premier is the 46th SM mall in the country and the 5th to open this year.

For the rest of 2012, SM Prime is scheduled to open SM Chongqing, which will bring its malls in China to 5.

The constructions at the Jacinto campus of Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) are at full force. The Php870 million project commenced last May, aiming to improve infrastructure and the sports facility program at the college's premises.

DFA opens doors at SM City, 3rd floor, for passport processing

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has announced that the DFA Mindanao and Regional Consular Office in Davao City have transferred to a new location at the 3rd Floor of the SM City Davao in Ecoland, Matina.

The opening was on September 3 to 8. The DFA while full operations on September 10.

The DFA has business hours from Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 8 pm for both processing and releasing of passports and even on Sundays, 10 am to 2 pm, for passport releasing.

For Filipinos, papers to prepare (dfa.gov.ph):

1. NSO-Authenticated Birth Certificate
2. At least 3 supporting documents showing your full name, date and place of birth. Government-issued IDs such as SSS ID (or Form E-1), GSIS ID, Driver's license, Voter's ID, etc. can also be included.
3. Filled-up Passport application form - You can get one from the Information Desk at the DFA office.

Processing Time and Fees:
1. Normal Processing (23 working days) - Php950.00
2. Express Processing (13 working days) - Php1,200.00

A 5.5 earthquake shakes Davao region early dawn

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 quake was felt in the Davao area this early dawn of Friday the 21st.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS) explained that the earthquake was recorded at 5:21 a.m. The epicenter was at 138 km southeast of Mati, Davao Oriental and tectonic in origin.

According to PHILVOCS, the following intesities were felt in these regions:
- Intensity IV (Moderately strong): Mati City
- Intensity III (Weak): Davao City

While Phivolcs does not expect the quake to cause damage, although aftershocks are possible.

Baby news: Davao City mayor, Sara Duterte-Carpio, pregnant

Happy news broke last Wednesday (September 5), Davao City mayor,  Sara Duterte-Carpio confirmed that she is an expecting mother, and in her eight weeks.

"Too early to announce but daghan na nakahibalo na naga-confirm (It’s too early to announce but many people who know are already confirming the news)," the mayor said to Sun.Star Davao.

She shared that she does not have any gender preference for her baby nor had she thought of a baby name at this early. She hopes that the baby will be a baby of good health. "Murag wait and see pa gyud mi (It's a wait and see for us). It's too early to be happy," the mayor said.

Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU): Community and Sports Center to rise soon downtown

The constructions at the Jacinto campus of Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) are at full force. The Php870 million project commenced last May, aiming to improve infrastructure and the sports facility program at their premises.


As soon as the Society of Jesus in Rome gave its permission, AdDU under the leadership of their president Fr. Joel E. Tabora S.J. started with the long project, which will be the the tallest educational building in Davao City when completed.

The community center of 12 levels and will be intended mainly to the faculty and staff of the university. According to reports, solar panels will be placed on the community center’s roof deck to power the lighting of the building and ceiling fans for the ventilation of the entire building. A communications tower will also be present on the building’s roof. 

The sports center and assembly hall, which will be built beside the community tower, will house eight levels and include athletic facilities including three basketball courts and locker rooms, with a plan of expansion to include two more courts and a fitness area for dance classes and the like.

The said center will rise on the corner of Roxas Avenue and Padre Zamora Street while the Sports Center and Assembly Hall will be located along Jacinto Street. The construction of the two buildings is to be completed within 18 to 24 months’ time, and expected to take face end of this year.

As of the moment (September), the buildings and areas facing Jacinto street were removed and cleared, to give way to the construction company that started erecting phase 1 of the 12-storey community facility.

Philvocs: 271 aftershocks felt, at least 19 of those occurred in Mindanao after Friday's 7.6 earthquake

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded at least 271 aftershocks (according to The Inquirer) and about 19 aftershocks in certain Mindanao (as reported Sun.Star Davao). Those aftershocks followed the earthquake of a magnitude of 7.6 that occurred in Visayas and Mindanao areas around 8:45 p.m. last Friday (August 31).

According to Philvolcs, the epicenter of last Friday's earthquake is said to be 112 kilometer of Eastern Samar.

Since then, there were seven separate earthquakes recorded mostly in the area of Surigao with an intensity of five and above. The last was experienced in Burgos, Surigao del Norte, around 10 am between 5.5 to 6 magnitude.

Aftershocks in certain parts of Davao City and Davao del Norte were recorded to be of an intensity 5 last Friday.

Phivolcs pointed out in a report that the 7.6 earthquake was tectonic in origin with a depth of 45 km below seabed.

Phivolcs also issued a tsunami alert, especially to communities along the eastern coast of the country.

The Davao City Disaster Risk-Reduction and Management Council did not record any significant damage or emergency. However in Cagayan de Oro, a women died and one got injured.
